Richard Miller, the eldest son of Air Force  MSgt William L. Miller (retired), and a retired SMSgt. himself, contacted us recently about his dad.  Richard writes:

"Bill Miller  was stationed in Japan and assigned to FEN from around '67 - '71.  Besides the morning show that he did, "Burnt Toast and Coffee Time," he also broadcast many live sporting events in the Kanto Plains area (along with Bill Asher and others), did the annual Telethon, and I believe, at one point, was the Station Manager at the North Camp Drake facility.   He passed away in 1981."

"My dad cross trained from fire/rescue into radio at Homestead in late 50s, where he  "moonlighted" at several local Miami radio stations.  His assignments included:

  • Spangdahlem, Germany, AFRTS TV and radio announcer

  • Nourasseur AB, Morrocco, news announcer, morning show and station manager

  • Wheelus AFB, Tripoli, Libya, news announcer, morning show and station manager, and hosted the Bob Hope Show there

  • AF Systems Command, Maryland

  • Korat AB, Thailand, NCOIC station manager, toured with Bob Hope Show in Viet Nam

  • FEN, South Camp Drake, Japan (67-71), "Burnt Toast and Coffee Time" morning show with Bud Widom (Sidney), news director(?), NCOIC, sports and news announcer. "

Bill passed away May 1981.  Richard would love to here from anyone who knew his dad.   You may contact him at miller1@socom.mil Richard promises some photos and audio of his dad in the future.

It was Lt. Col. Dick Hiner (USAF, Retired) who first   identifyied the picture below  (circa 1968) of Bill Miller, doing the morning show on FEN-Tokyo.

Dick recalls that "Burnt Toast and Coffee Time" was hosted along with Bud Widom, Production Director for FEN.  Dick says:  "(Bud) would burst unannounced into Bill's studio and do a character named Sidney. Sidney sounded a lot like W.C. Fields. It made for an exciting morning show."

The picture and article below were found in a Base Guide for Yokota. Note that even though FEN is now located on Yokota, this piece was written while the studios were still located at South Camp Drake.
